With the urge to giveback running in their blood, a small group of the University of Houston students came together in 2006 to work on a community service project. What they discovered was the spark that ignited their growing passion for refugee services. Uncovering the large scale of unmet needs of thousands of refugees in their own city, this group of students began to collect food, clothing, furniture and even funds for distribution on their weekends. They quickly realized that fulfilling only short-term and immediate needs was not enough to fully support the many refugees in the city.
Two years later in 2008, Amaanah Refugee Services was established as the official and now popular refugee services organization fueled by a drive to revolutionize the industry. Amaanah’s outstanding staff and volunteers are and have always been the heart and soul of this organization, solely driven by the impact they are able to have in thousands of people’s lives.
Ultimately, the purpose of Amaanah is to make the refugee resettlement process fun, memorable, and life-changing for refugees and the communities in which they resettle. Using personal relationships as the foundation for all services, we hope to improve the resettlement system to one that produces individuals who are an inspiration to society and ambassadors of Amaanah.
Amaanah’s is working to become largest and most impactful refugee services organization in the United States. We envision our programs and services entering every refugee-accepting city and being accessible to all refugees working to build a new life.
